30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Observations of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 in Spring 2006 with VERITAS

چکیده
VERITAS, the Very Energetic Radiation Telescope Imaging Array System, is an array of four imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in southern Arizona. It is sensitive to gamma rays at energies above 100GeV. Here, we discuss the results of observations of two well known VHE blazars, Markarian 421 and Markarian 501, during Spring 2006 which were made with the first two telescopes during the comissioning phase of VERITAS. During most of this time Mrk 421 was in an unusually active state while Mrk 501 was in a much lower flux state. As such, these observations provided an opportunity to test the sensitivity of the instrument to strong and weak sources. We discuss implications of these observations on our understanding of these objects.

Highlights of Recent Multiwavelength Observations of VHE Blazars with VERITAS
We present long-term observations of several VHE (E > 100 GeV) blazars with VERITAS, together with contemporaneous Swift and RXTE Xray data. The observed targets include Mrk 421, Mrk 501, 1ES 2344+514. Strong flux and spectral variability is seen in Mrk 421 on nightly time-scales between January and June 2008, revealing a highly correlated X-ray to GeV/TeV connection. Modest Xray variability is...

We describe the beginnings of a multi-wavelength analysis of TeV blazars using observations from the WIYN 0.9m optical telescope, the VERITAS gamma-ray telescope, and the AMANDA/IceCube neutrino detector. Optical data were taken for Mrk 421, Mrk 501, and 1ES 1959+650 in coincidence with gamma-ray observations over a two-month period in AprJune 2006. In the future we hope to use a statistical an...
متن کاملUnderstanding the Spectra of TeV Blazars: Implications for the Cosmic Infrared Background
With the arrival of powerful, ground-based γ-ray detectors, we can now begin to seriously probe, via simultaneous X-ray/TeV observations, the origin of the γray emission in the blazars Mrk 421 and 501. If the synchrotron-Compton emission model turns out to work, then we know that the same electrons are responsible for both the X-ray and the γ-ray emission of these objects. In this case, we show...
متن کاملIntrinsic Spectra of the TeV Blazars Mrk 421 and Mrk 501
Energy spectra of γ-ray blazars may contain an imprint from the cosmic infrared background radiation due to γ-ray absorption (pair-production) by soft photons constituting the extragalactic background light (EBL). The signature of this imprint depends on the spectral shape of the EBL. In this work we correct the observed spectra of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 for absorption using different possible rea...

Recent observations of the TeV γ-ray spectra of the two closest active galactic nuclei (AGNs), Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) and Markarian 421 (Mrk 421), by the Whipple and HEGRA collaborations have stimulated efforts to estimate or limit the spectral energy density (SED) of extragalactic background light (EBL) which causes attenuation of TeV photons via pair-production when they travel cosmological ...
